This page explains what cookies and similar storage technologies BirthBrief uses, why, and how you can control them.
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a website. It allows the site to remember information across page loads or sessions. Similar technologies include localStorage (browser-side key-value storage) and sessionStorage.
| Name | Type | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
bb_cc |
Necessary (consent record) | 365 days | Stores your cookie consent choices so the banner does not re-appear on every visit. Set by our self-hosted consent library (cc.js v3.1.0 — no external scripts). |
bb_gate_passed |
Functional (HTTP-only) | 90 days | Records that you have completed the free reading email gate. Cannot be read by JavaScript. No personal data — value is a fixed flag (1). |
| Key | Consent required | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
bb_teaser_gate |
No (functional) | Persistent (until cleared) | Stores your gate-passed flag so you can return to your free reading without re-entering your email. Never sent to our servers. |
bb_ga4_cid |
Yes (analytics) | Persistent (until cleared) | Anonymous Google Analytics 4 client identifier. A random string — no personal data. Used to distinguish sessions in our GA4 proxy. Only set if you accept analytics. |
Meta Pixel (marketing, opt-in): If you accept marketing cookies, we load the Meta Pixel from Facebook's servers. Meta may set their own cookies. These are governed by Meta's Privacy Policy.
Google Analytics 4 (analytics, opt-in): We use GA4 via a server-side proxy on our own domain (/api/analytics). No Google cookies are set in your browser. Only an anonymous client ID stored in localStorage (see above) is used. The proxy forwards anonymised usage data to Google.
Stripe sets cookies on the stripe.com domain during checkout. These are governed exclusively by Stripe's privacy policy.
bb_cc and bb_gate_passed are strictly necessary (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b) — contract performance) and do not require consent.
Analytics and marketing cookies require your explicit consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw consent at any time by clicking "Manage preferences" in the cookie banner or the footer link.
You can delete or block cookies at any time through your browser settings:
Blocking the bb_gate_passed cookie means you will be asked to enter your email on each visit to the free reading page.
